How To….Hatch and Raise Baby Goldfish
(The fish above are about a month old) Baby Goldfish are very cute but delicate creatures. This week my Goldfish had her second set of eggs. The first batch I wasn’t prepared and only saved 1 of the fish but this round we have hundreds. So here’s a few tips and tricks to help you out.
1. If your wondering if your fish is getting ready to lay eggs you will notice the male will follow the female none stop for a few days and the females belly will get round. She will also spend some time at the bottom of the tank. Around these days you’re going to want to get a smaller tank and move the mother and father to this tank (make sure you use the same water from the other tank) put some trees in the tank with them (the mother likes laying the eggs on the trees and it’s easier for the male to spray.)
2. The day of mating the male fish will follow the female around as she begins to release the eggs (hundreds of them) this should take up to three hours while the male sprays them. Once she stops spreading the eggs and the male stops spraying you need to move the two back to the other tank or they will eat the eggs.
3. The eggs that are clear are the fertilized eggs within a few hours you will see little black dots. The eggs that are cloudy will get fungus rings around them if you don’t put some anti fungous drops in there. (It’s okay to use before the eggs hatch but not after the babies hatch or it could hurt them and if a lot of fungus gets in there it could kill the babies)
4. Within a day or so you will begin to see lots of little black babies hatch and cling onto the glass as they learn to swim. You can boil an egg then feed them some of the yoke. Within a month the babies will start to change color and become stronger swimmers. If you’d like to move them back to the main tank most pet stores sell these little baby tanks that you put in the tank and acts like a strainer between the bigger fish and the babies.
Enjoy your new fish!
